Tutorial Mode

Show users a guided intro app before they reach the home screen

Written by Brian Tanabe

Tutorial Mode opens an app of your choice on top of the normal device experience every time a headset boots. When paired with a tutorial app (such as Meta's First Steps), users can have a guided introduction before they reach the ManageXR home screen.

Once the user quits the Tutorial App, they will land in the device experience selected for the configuration. You can override Tutorial Mode on a specific device using the Disable Tutorial Mode command.

Set a Tutorial App

  1. Navigate to Configurations and open a configuration.

  2. Go to the Apps tab and make sure the app you intend to use as your Tutorial App is deployed.

  3. Select the Device Settings tab.

  4. In the All Devices section, find the Tutorial Mode subsection.

  5. Choose your app from the Tutorial App dropdown.

  6. Click Save Changes.

Turn Tutorial Mode off or on for one device

Use the Disable Tutorial Mode and Enable Tutorial Mode device commands to override the configuration's Tutorial Mode setting for a single device without changing it for other devices. You can also send these commands in bulk from the device list. When a device's Tutorial Mode is turned off, it will remain off until it is turned back on, even if you change or remove the device's Tutorial App.

Requirements and limitations

  • Admin App version 2026.8.13-h2 or later is required.

  • Legacy Meta Quest devices (enrolled through the Device Setup Tool) do not support Tutorial Mode yet.

  • Pico devices running PUI 4 do not support Tutorial Mode. Setting a Tutorial App has no effect on them.

  • The Tutorial App does not launch when a device is set to the Default Device Menus experience mode.

  • The Tutorial App will not launch if the device has Kiosk Mode set to disabled.

  • Tutorial Mode is available to organizations with a Premium or Enterprise subscription.

FAQs

What happens if the Tutorial App is not installed yet when the device boots?

If the Tutorial App is not yet installed on a device when it boots, for example while it is still downloading, the device will skip the tutorial for that boot. The app will launch on subsequent boots once the installation finishes.

I enabled Tutorial Mode on a device that was already running. Why did nothing open?

If you enable Tutorial Mode while a device is already running, it will open on the device's next boot.

Can I use a video as the Tutorial App?

No, the Tutorial App must be an app.

Is this the same as the tutorial in the Meta Shared Mode session intro?

No. Meta Horizon Shared Mode has its own session intro screens, separate from ManageXR Tutorial Mode.
