ManageXR is now integrated with Meta Horizon managed services (formerly known as Meta Quest for Business). All Meta Quest devices must enroll in ManageXR via Meta Horizon managed services (MHMS) moving forward. The integration with Meta improves the device management experience and unlocks new features and functionality not available to devices previously enrolled in ManageXR via the Device Setup Tool, now referred to as Legacy Meta Devices.

As your fleet grows, you may find yourself managing a mixed fleet of legacy devices and devices enrolled via Meta Horizon managed services. This guide teaches you how to identify legacy devices and walks through the differences in feature support between legacy devices and Meta devices enrolled through MHMS.

Definition: Legacy Meta devices

All Meta Quest devices enrolled in ManageXR via the ManageXR Device Setup Tool are considered legacy Meta devices.

You can still continue to manage legacy Meta devices on ManageXR as usual, however, these devices will not get access to the latest features and functionality that become available through ManageXR’s integration with Meta.

Other Manufacturers: Devices from other manufacturers (e.g., Pico, HTC) enrolled via the Device Setup Tool are not legacy devices. You may continue enrolling them through the Device Setup Tool.

How to identify legacy Meta devices

There are a few quick ways you can determine whether your device is a legacy Meta device from within the ManageXR Web Console:

Method 1: Filter your device list

You can use the available filters on the device list to find all of the devices in your organization that are legacy Meta devices. Filter the device list by device type and enrollment method:

  1. Go to Devices

  2. In the filter bar on the left, select all Meta Quest devices models that appear in your organization. You may need to scroll down.

  3. In the filter bar on the left, select “Enrolled via Device Setup Tool”. You will need to scroll down.

The filtered list includes all legacy Meta devices that were enrolled in ManageXR through the Device Setup Tool.

To find non-legacy Meta devices enrolled through Meta Horizon managed services, filter the device list by Enrolled via Meta Horizon.

Method 2: View the enrollment method

Confirm that an individual device is a legacy Meta device by viewing the enrollment method listed on the device page:

  1. Go to the device page

  2. Go to the Device Information tab

  3. Scroll down to find the Enrollment Method

    1. Device Setup Tool - If the Enrollment Method is Device Setup Tool on a Meta Quest device, it is a legacy Meta device:

    2. Meta Horizon - If the Enrollment Method is Meta Horizon, it is a non-legacy Meta device that was enrolled through Meta Horizon managed services.

Method 3: Check whether the device is operating in a Meta Horizon mode (Shared Mode, Individual Mode)

All Meta devices enrolled via Meta Horizon managed services must operate either in Shared Mode or Individual Mode. Legacy Meta devices do not use Meta Horizon device modes.

  • Non-Legacy Device: Reports using Shared Mode or Individual Mode

  • Legacy Meta Device: Does not report a Meta Horizon mode

Devices in Shared Mode do not require Meta accounts.

Devices in Individual Mode require a Managed Meta Account.

A developer-enabled Meta account or test user account is tied to the device.

All Meta Quest devices enrolled via MHMS use Meta Horizon device modes. Device modes have implications for the supported device experiences: Using restricted kiosk experiences (Custom Home, Kiosk App, Kiosk Video) requires Shared Mode. Using Default Device Menus requires Individual Mode. Learn more

  • Do NOT use Meta Horizon device modes

  • You can freely switch device experiences between restricted kiosk (Custom Home, Kiosk App, Kiosk Video) and Default Device Menus
