Meta devices previously enrolled with the Device Setup Tool are considered legacy devices. These devices won’t receive the latest features available through Meta Horizon managed services (MHMS), such as remote power off and account-free Shared Mode.
Migrating a legacy device to MHMS is a zero-touch process—no factory reset required. This doc contains all of the information you need to know before you migrate your legacy devices to HMS!
Requirements & Limitations
✅ Requirements (must be met before migration)
MHMS licenses – Your organization must have enough active licenses for the devices you’re migrating. 👉 Learn more
Minimum firmware version – Devices must be on Meta firmware v76 or later. 👉 Tips for upgrading firmware
Configuration requirements – Devices must use a Restricted Kiosk experience such as a custom Home Screen, Kiosk App, or Kiosk Video. This is because devices must be migrated into Shared Mode to uses this zero-touch process.
⚠️ Limitations
Only Shared Mode supported – Devices can only zero-touch migrate into Shared Mode. To use Individual Mode, you must factory reset and re-enroll. 👉 Learn more about device modes
No Meta Store apps – Apps downloaded directly from the Meta Horizon Store will be removed during migration since consumer accounts are removed from the device.
Irreversible process – Once a device is migrated to MHMS, you cannot convert it back to the legacy experience.
Why Migrate to MHMS?
Migrating to MHMS unlocks new capabilities for your devices:
Access to new features – Remote Power Off command, System Language settings, and more. 👉 Learn more about feature differences
Account-free device use – Use devices in Shared Mode without Meta accounts, eliminating issues like re-authentication codes.
Reasons Not to Migrate to MHMS
Cost - You will need sufficient HMS licenses for all of the devices you wish to migrate. The published price for HMS licenses for a device previously purchased is $14.99/mo or $179.99/yr.
Using Store Apps - If you're using apps from the Meta Horizon store, we recommend not migrating to HMS. When you migrate, your consumer account and store apps will be removed from the device.
You want the flexibility to enable/disable kiosk - With the HMS experience and device modes, it is not possible to temporarily enable/disable kiosk like it is in the legacy experience. Your devices are either in locked down Shared Mode (where they can use the ManageXR Home Screen, Kiosk App, or Kiosk Video), or have full device access in Individual Mode.
